Visual Review

The Big Banyan Limited Sauvignon Blanc makes a rather classy first impression. The label has plenty of elegance, while the wine itself shows a deep, intense gold colour that is clear and brilliantly bright. Given its age, the golden evolution is hardly surprising, and it actually adds a certain charm to the visual experience.

Aroma Review

The nose is much more restrained. It starts off light and fairly simple, with an average aromatic intensity that takes some coaxing. A good swirl finally reveals ripe peach, exotic pineapple and the faintest touch of vanilla. Considering its age, I was expecting a more expressive nose, so the aromatics are clearly the quieter part of the experience.

Taste Review

The palate, thankfully, has much more to say. High, lemony acidity gives the wine a wonderfully refreshing edge, while its medium body and viscosity provide enough weight to keep things nicely grounded. It is dry, distinctly flavoured and remarkably well balanced, with the acidity, body and alcohol working together almost perfectly. The complexity remains moderate, but the long, pleasant finish more than makes up for any lack of drama.

Overall, this is a highly enjoyable Sauvignon Blanc, and the palate is considerably more impressive than the nose. The combination of freshness, texture and balance makes it particularly satisfying to drink, while its structure suggests that it still has excellent aging potential. A very good wine, with a little more life in it than its quiet nose initially lets on.
